Train: AirTrain, NJ Transit and Amtrak

Take the AirTrain from your terminal to the Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station and connect to NJ Transit or Amtrak. Estimated AirTrain times from the station: Terminal C 7 minutes, Terminal B 11 minutes, Terminal A 20 minutes. EWR says AirTrain trains generally arrive every 3 to 5 minutes, and between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. they run as a shuttle service every 15 minutes at Terminals B and C.

AirTrain fare: $8.75 one way, in addition to the transit fare. The fee is built into NJ Transit and Amtrak tickets to or from Newark Airport station, and EWR says the NJ Transit app includes it when you buy ahead. If your ticket does not cover this station, you pay $8.75 at the station gates. Pay with a contactless card or phone, in the NJ Transit app or web ticketing, or at ticket machines. A monthly pass saves about 30% for frequent travelers.

NJ Transit trains run on the Northeast Corridor and the North Jersey Coast Line, and NJ Transit says trains from New York Penn Station need no transfer. On the Raritan Valley Line you change at Newark Penn Station to a Northeast Corridor train, one stop from the airport. NJ Transit does not post a frequency or first and last train on its airport page, and neither does EWR. Check the NJ Transit app or trip planner for your time. Buy before you board: NJ Transit says buying on the train adds a $5 surcharge.

From the airport station the airport lists these trips:

  • Newark Penn Station: 5 minutes, $12.05 (NJ Transit's own airport page shows $12.30, so check the app)
  • Midtown Manhattan: 30 minutes, $17.25
  • 33rd Street PATH: 40 minutes, $11.75
  • World Trade Center: 45 minutes, $11.75
  • Journal Square PATH: 30 minutes, $15.05
  • Hoboken Terminal: 55 minutes, $15.05 or $17.05
  • Trenton Transit Center: 68 minutes by NJ Transit, $23.25, or 40 minutes by Amtrak, fare varies
  • North Philadelphia: 120 minutes by SEPTA and NJ Transit, $37, or 70 minutes by Amtrak, fare varies

The airport's table contradicts itself: the PATH trips pass through Newark Penn Station, yet they are listed cheaper than the $12.05 ride to Newark Penn alone, probably because the AirTrain fee is not counted. Price any PATH trip in the NJ Transit app before you rely on it.

Amtrak Northeast Regional trains also stop at the station. Amtrak says you can scan an eTicket that shows Newark Airport at the AirTrain gate. Phone numbers: Amtrak +1 (800) 872-7245, NJ Transit +1 (973) 275-5555, PATH +1 (800) 234-7284.

AirTrain construction until November 13, 2026

From July 27 to November 13, 2026, the AirTrain does not serve the Airport Train Station Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Going to the city: take the AirTrain from your terminal to P4 Station, then transfer to a free shuttle bus to the Airport Train Station. Arriving by train: take the free shuttle bus directly to your terminal.

Allow 10 to 15 extra minutes. Weekends and other hours run normally. Follow the signs with a red banner.

Bus: express and NJ Transit

The CoachUSA Newark Airport Express Bus stops at every terminal. In Midtown it stops at Grand Central Terminal (41st Street between Park and Lexington Avenues), Bryant Park (42nd Street and 5th Avenue) and Port Authority Bus Terminal (41st Street between 8th and 9th Avenues). The trip takes about 50 minutes. Fares are $23.50 one way or $39.50 round trip, with discounts for seniors and travelers with accessibility needs and multi-trip packages. EWR does not list express bus schedules, so check CoachUSA.

NJ Transit also runs local buses to the airport: routes 28, 37, 62, 67 and 107. EWR lists frequent service from Newark Penn Station and Elizabeth. At Newark Penn Station the buses leave from the Raymond Boulevard Bus Lanes, Gate 3A by day and Gate 2A after 10:00 p.m. ET. The other routes serve Maplewood, Irvington and Newark, Bloomfield and Newark, and central and shore towns such as Brick, Lakewood and Freehold. NJ Transit says select routes serve the airport terminals directly with no AirTrain transfer. Neither EWR nor NJ Transit says which terminal curb each route uses, so check the NJ Transit trip planner before you go.

Uber, Lyft and Uber Shuttle

Ride app pick-up spots:

  • Terminal A: arrivals level, across the street from the terminal
  • Terminal B: arrivals level, on the terminal frontage
  • Terminal C: Level 3 of the Terminal C Garage

EWR publishes no ride app prices, so open the Uber or Lyft app for a quote before you request. Prices depend on pick-up spot and time of day. If you need a closer pick-up point for accessibility reasons, contact Uber or Lyft in the app.

Uber Shuttle is a shared, lower cost option you book in the Uber app. It serves Manhattan on two routes, Grand Central and 7th Ave, with stops that include Port Authority Bus Terminal, Penn Station, Hudson Yards and Bryant Park.

Van and shuttle services

Authorized providers include Airlink New York (Manhattan), Carmel Super Saver (New York City, Long Island, Westchester and upstate New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania), ETS Air Shuttle (New York City) and Trans-Bridge Coach Lines (Westchester, Connecticut, Pennsylvania). By car, a route check found about 31 minutes to Midtown with no traffic. Plan for more in rush hour, and check live traffic before you leave.
