EWR Car Rental: Rental Car Center, Companies and Tolls

Every on-airport rental at Newark is in one building, the Rental Car Center, on Levels 1 through 3 of the Terminal A Parking Garage. From Terminal A you walk. From Terminal B or C, ride the free AirTrain to the Terminal A station and follow the signs. The current AirTrain work does not affect service to the Rental Cars station.

Your options at a glance

Where the Rental Car Center is

All the major on-airport companies work from the Rental Car Center, on Levels 1 through 3 of the Terminal A Parking Garage (also called Parking A Garage).

The airport lists 11 companies there. Each has a fixed level, so you know where to walk once you are inside.

Getting there from each terminal

  • Terminal A: follow signs to the Rental Car Center. The airport says it is walking distance, with no shuttle or AirTrain needed. Its AirTrain page puts the walk between the Terminal A station and the terminal at about 15 minutes on a covered pathway, or a 5-minute free shuttle bus.
  • Terminal B or C: take the AirTrain to the Terminal A station, then follow signs to the Rental Car Center. The airport puts the walk from that station at about five minutes, along a covered corridor.
  • The AirTrain is free between terminals and the Rental Car Center.
  • A free shuttle bus also runs between Terminal A and the Parking A Garage, which is also the Rental Car Center. EWR says it comes about every 5 minutes.

If a friend is dropping you off, they can use the designated rideshare zone at the Terminal A AirTrain station.

AirTrain work to know about

The Port Authority is building a replacement AirTrain. From July 27 to November 13, 2026, the AirTrain does not serve the Airport Train Station (the NJ Transit and Amtrak stop) Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Shuttle buses fill in.

The airport says service between Terminals A, B and C, Rental Cars, P3 Station and P4 Daily Parking is not affected. Weekends and other hours run normally.

If you arrive by NJ Transit or Amtrak on a weekday in that window, the airport says to take the free shuttle bus straight to your terminal. The airport suggests asking an Airport Customer Experience Specialist in a red uniform for help, and says to allow 10 to 15 extra minutes.

Returning your rental car

Enter "Terminal A Parking Newark" in your GPS to find the Rental Car Center. Refuel first. The airport says there are gas stations within two miles.

After you drop the car, take the AirTrain to your terminal. Budget extra time for that ride before your flight.

Tolls in a New Jersey rental

All Port Authority crossings in New Jersey are cashless, so you are billed electronically. Some other tolls can still be paid in cash.

Ask your rental company about its toll policy before you drive off. Some provide an E-ZPass transponder. If yours does, learn how it works and what fees apply, because the company may add an administrative fee.

Without a company transponder you have two options: pay by plate and the rental company bills you later, or use your own E-ZPass. If you use your own, do not add the rental car's plate to your E-ZPass account.

Accessible and hand-control cars

Some partner companies offer vehicles with hand controls. Contact the rental company directly. Ask it about shuttle service to or from your terminal as well. The AirTrain and its stations are ADA compliant, with elevators and escalators.

Fees, counter hours, off-airport companies and Turo

EWR does not publish rental fees, airport surcharges or counter hours, so read your quote before you book and call the company if you arrive late at night. The airport lists only the 11 companies above. Off-airport companies and Turo hosts set their own pickup spots: get the exact address and any shuttle details from your confirmation, and for Turo agree the meeting spot with the host before you fly.
