How to get to your gate at Newark
Start with your terminal. EWR's airline list puts Air Canada, American, Delta and JetBlue in Terminal A, more than 30 airlines in Terminal B, and United in Terminal C. United also flies domestic flights from Terminal A, so check your boarding pass.
Once past security, the airport lists these walking times from security to the gates:
- Terminal A: 3 to 6 minutes for gates A1 to A7 and A29 to A34, 2 to 10 minutes for gates A8 to A28
- Terminal B: 2 to 4 minutes to any gate
- Terminal C: 1 to 3 minutes for gates C70 to C74, 4 to 7 minutes for C75 to C123, 7 to 10 minutes for C125 to C139
For step-by-step directions, the airport points you to its interactive map.
Changing terminals: the AirTrain and the United shuttle
The AirTrain links Terminals A, B and C. It is free between terminals, and the airport says the ride takes under 20 minutes. From 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., trains stop at Terminals B and C every 15 minutes. The airport warns that many travelers who change terminals have to go through TSA screening again, so allow extra time.
The AirTrain does not stop at Terminal A itself. From the Terminal A station, walk about 15 minutes on a covered pathway or take the free shuttle bus, which comes every 5 to 10 minutes and takes about 5 minutes to reach Departures.
United runs a free airside shuttle bus, so United passengers arriving on a domestic flight in A or C can connect without going through security again. Routes and times on the airport's connections guide:
- Terminal A (Gate A28) to Terminal C (Gate C71): 3:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. in the guide's table (its FAQ lists 4 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.).
- Terminal A (Gate A28) to Terminal B (Gates B60 to B68): 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Terminal C (Gate C71) to Terminal B (Gates B60 to B68): 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The stop at Gate B67 is drop-off only: from Terminal B, you cannot ride it to A or C. Access in Terminal B is by stairs only; for a step-free route, the airport says to take the AirTrain and clear TSA again. United sets the schedule and can change it.
Through November 13, 2026, the AirTrain skips the Airport Train Station on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Service between the terminals is not affected.
International flights and customs
All three terminals have international flights. EWR's airline list shows domestic and international departures for JetBlue in Terminal A, where Air Canada, American and Delta also fly, and domestic and international flights for United in Terminal C. Terminal B serves more than 30 airlines.
The International Arrivals Facility for U.S. Customs is in Terminal B, which the Port Authority says opened in 1996. JetBlue's international arrivals land there, and the airport says some overnight international United flights may too. The Port Authority also describes U.S. Customs facilities in Terminal C.
Arriving from abroad with a connection? Clear customs, collect your bags, recheck them and go through security again.
Reading the gate numbers
The letter is the terminal: gate A22 is in Terminal A, gate C104 in Terminal C. Not every number is used:
- Terminal A runs from A1 to A34. The official directory lists no A13.
- Terminal B has three groups: B40 to B49 in the B1 satellite, then B51 to B57 and B60 to B68.
- Terminal C runs from C70 to C139, with gaps such as C76 to C79, C100 and C116 to C119.
On the official map, gates B64 and B65 share one point, labeled "Gates B64, B65", and so do B66 and B67. They are separate gates, so our table lists each one.
Terminal C also has three gates with a letter: C71Z, which the official map places at the United shuttle stop near Gate C71, and C111X and C112X. The official map puts C111X and C112X, along with gates C87, C88, C97, C99, C114 and C115, on Level 2 rather than on the departures mezzanine. Gate C139 appears in the directory only as an arrival gate.
Type your gate in the finder above. Gates change, so check your boarding pass and the airport screens.
