Where to see MIA security wait times

MIA publishes its own checkpoint wait-time page. It lists General, Priority, TSA-Pre and Clear columns for checkpoints 1 to 10 and one labeled FIS (DFIS on the hours list), each as a minimum and maximum in minutes. It also links a map to help you find the checkpoint nearest your gate.

We don't print wait numbers here on purpose. They change all day, so open the live page on miami-airport.com before you leave.

When to arrive at MIA

MIA says arrival times vary by airline and day, so check with your airline first. It also leaves room for parking or transit, bag check and screening.

The airport page quotes TSA's advice: at least 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. A different MIA page, the Departures page, says at least 2 hours for international flights. The two pages disagree, so treat 3 hours as the safer number for international and confirm with your airline.

MIA does not offer a reservation or time-slot program for security.

MIA checkpoints and hours

MIA groups its checkpoints by terminal. Hours are the ones posted by the airport on October 9, 2026.

North Terminal (Concourse D):

  • Checkpoint 1: 4:00 am to 8:15 pm
  • Checkpoint 2: 3:30 am to 11:45 pm
  • Checkpoint 3: 4:00 am to 9:45 pm
  • Checkpoint 4: 4:00 am to 8:15 pm
  • Checkpoint DFIS: 5:15 am to 9:30 pm

Central Terminal:

  • Checkpoint 5: 4:00 am to 10:45 pm
  • Checkpoint 6: 3:30 am to 10:45 pm
  • Checkpoint 7: 4:00 am to 8:15 pm

South Terminal:

  • Checkpoint 8: 4:00 am to 8:15 pm
  • Checkpoint 9: open 24 hours
  • Checkpoint 10: 4:15 am to 7:15 pm

MIA publishes a checkpoint map on its Maps page. It does not list which gates each checkpoint feeds, so use the map and your boarding pass, and pick the checkpoint for your own concourse.

TSA PreCheck at MIA

MIA lists PreCheck at Checkpoints 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, during each checkpoint's hours. For Checkpoints 2, 3, 4 and DFIS, MIA's page shows no PreCheck note, so ask your airline or check the live wait page, which has a TSA-Pre column.

PreCheck members keep shoes, jackets, belts and laptops on. Children 12 and under can go through the PreCheck lane with a parent or guardian who has it.

PreCheck itself comes from TSA. MIA's Expedited Security page sends you to TSA to enroll.

CLEAR at MIA

CLEAR uses biometrics to confirm who you are, then moves you into the TSA screening line. MIA says you can enroll on the CLEAR website or at a CLEAR kiosk at the airport.

MIA does not say which checkpoints have a CLEAR lane. Its wait-time page has a Clear column, so open the live page to see where CLEAR is offered. If your checkpoint shows N/A, ask CLEAR staff or your airline.

Priority lanes, Global Entry and new technology

MIA lists an American Airlines priority lane at Checkpoints 1, 2 and 3 in the North Terminal. The airport does not list other airlines' priority lanes, so ask your airline.

Global Entry costs $120 for five years and is run by CBP. MIA has dedicated Global Entry kiosks and lanes in the North and South Terminals for international arrivals, and Mobile Passport Control in all terminals for qualifying travelers.

MIA also uses biometric facial comparison to board international flights at most gates (you walk up to a camera instead of showing a boarding pass or passport). 3-D scanners that improve explosives detection are installed at the Concourse D and E FIS checkpoints.

Before you reach the checkpoint

Only ticketed passengers can go past the checkpoints. If you need to accompany someone for a medical, parental or other verifiable reason, ask the airline.

MIA's page repeats the basics: one carry-on plus one personal item, laptops out of their cases, and carry-on liquids in containers of 3.4 ounces or less in a quart bag. Buy food after screening if you plan to carry it on board.

Rules for IDs, shoes and liquids are covered on our general TSA pages.

Left something at a checkpoint

TSA does not give banned items back. Items left at a checkpoint reach MIA Lost and Found on the next business day, but TSA does not send confiscated items there.

The Lost and Found office is on Level 4 of North Terminal D and is open 7 days a week, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What may change

MIA's capital plan calls for a new consolidated checkpoint in the Central Terminal and for moving the Concourse F checkpoint from the third floor to the second. MIA's brochure gives no dates, so checkpoint locations and hours may change. Check the airport's checkpoint map before you travel.

Questions travelers ask

How long are security lines at MIA?

MIA shows live wait times for every checkpoint on its own Security Checkpoint Wait Times page. We don't print numbers here because they change all day. Open that page before you leave and pick the checkpoint closest to your gate.

What time does MIA security close?

It depends on the checkpoint. Checkpoint 10 closes at 7:15 pm, Checkpoints 1, 4, 7 and 8 at 8:15 pm, and Checkpoint 9 never closes. Checkpoint 2 stays open until 11:45 pm.

Use the checkpoint for your own concourse. MIA publishes a checkpoint map and a wait-time page that links to it. Check the hours first, since some checkpoints close early in the evening.
