John F. Kennedy International Airport
JFK Gate Map: Terminals 1, 4, 5, 7, 8 and the AirTrain
JFK has five terminals in service: 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8. They are not linked past security, so changing terminals means a ride on the free AirTrain and a new TSA check. Gate numbers repeat between Terminals 1, 7 and 8, so find your terminal first, then your gate.

How to get to your gate at JFK
Start with your terminal, not your gate. JFK's terminals are separate buildings, each with its own security checkpoint and its own AirTrain station. Go by the airline that operates your flight: a Finnair ticket flown by American, for example, leaves from American's terminal, Terminal 8.
Once past security, you stay in your terminal. The Port Authority's walking times from security to the gates:
- Terminal 1: 1 to 5 minutes
- Terminal 4: 3 to 14 minutes, the B42 to B55 gates being the farthest
- Terminal 5: 3 to 10 minutes
- Terminal 7: 1 to 5 minutes
- Terminal 8: 2 to 12 minutes
Changing terminals: the AirTrain
The terminals are not connected past security. To switch, follow the signs to the AirTrain. It is free between terminals, takes under 10 minutes, and trains come every 5 to 15 minutes. Then go through TSA again at your departure terminal, so budget time for a full line.
Arriving from abroad and connecting? Clear immigration and customs, collect your bags, recheck them, then change terminals if needed and clear security again.
Terminal 4: Concourses A and B
Terminal 4 has the most gates at JFK: 52 in the official directory, A gates on one side and B gates on the other. Delta runs a free shuttle bus between the two concourses, and you stay past security. It stops at Gate B23, Gate B54 and near Gate A9. The Port Authority notes it is not always faster than walking.
Official walking times from security:
- A3 to A8: 3 to 6 minutes
- A9 to A21: 8 to 10 minutes
- B18 to B31: 4 to 6 minutes
- B32 to B41: 7 to 9 minutes
- B42 to B55: 10 to 14 minutes
Reading the gate numbers
Terminal 4 gates carry a letter, A or B. Terminal 5 gates run from 501 to 530. Terminals 1, 7 and 8 use plain numbers, and the same numbers exist in more than one of them: there is a Gate 1 in Terminal 1, in Terminal 7 and in Terminal 8. If you type one of these numbers in the finder, it shows every terminal that has it: check the terminal on your boarding pass.
Not every number is used. Terminal 8 jumps from Gate 20 to Gate 31, and Terminal 5 has no Gate 513. Open the gate list of a terminal to see every gate. Gates can change, so check your boarding pass and the airport screens.
Terminals under construction
Terminal 6 and the New Terminal One are still being built and have no gates on the official map yet, so they are not on ours. The Port Authority expects the first 14 gates of the New Terminal One to open in 2027. The new Terminal 6 will occupy the site of Terminal 7, which stays open until the second phase of Terminal 6 construction begins, planned for 2026. No exact closing date is published.
Questions travelers ask
How many gates does JFK have?
The gate directory of JFK's official interactive map lists 132 gates in five terminals (checked October 10, 2026): 14 in Terminal 1, 52 in Terminal 4, 29 in Terminal 5, 6 in Terminal 7 and 31 in Terminal 8.
Which terminal is my gate in at JFK?
Your gate number alone is not enough, because Terminals 1, 7 and 8 share numbers. Check the terminal on your boarding pass or in your airline's app. Gates with a letter, like A5 or B32, are in Terminal 4, and gates 501 to 530 are in Terminal 5.
Can I walk between terminals at JFK?
Not past security. The terminals are not linked airside. Take the free AirTrain, which connects them in under 10 minutes, then go through TSA again at your departure terminal.
How do I get from the A gates to the B gates in Terminal 4?
Walk, or take Delta's free shuttle bus, which keeps you past security. It stops at Gate B23, Gate B54 and near Gate A9. It is not always faster than walking.
Which terminals handle international flights at JFK?
All five. Terminals 1, 4, 7 and 8 host foreign airlines, from Air France in Terminal 1 to British Airways in Terminal 8. JetBlue flies from Terminal 5, but its international arrivals between 10:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. land at Terminal 4.
