JFK terminals and airlines

Five passenger terminals are open: 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8. Each has its own AirTrain station, and there is no Terminal 2, 3 or 6 in service.

  • Terminal 1: Air France, Lufthansa, Korean Air, Turkish Airlines and 22 other international airlines.
  • Terminal 4: Delta plus 20 other airlines such as Emirates, KLM and Virgin Atlantic. It is the only terminal open 24 hours.
  • Terminal 5: JetBlue, Cape Air and Sun Country.
  • Terminal 7: Air Canada, Aer Lingus, ANA, Frontier, Icelandair, Norse and four more.
  • Terminal 8: American Airlines, British Airways, Qatar, Japan Airlines and 11 more.

Go by the airline that actually operates your flight, not the one you booked with. A Finnair ticket flown by American, for example, leaves from American's terminal. Flying JetBlue home from abroad late at night? Arrivals between 10:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. use Terminal 4.

What's changing at JFK right now

JFK is in the middle of a $19 billion rebuild, and the Port Authority asks travelers to take public transit to dodge construction traffic. Here is what matters this fall.

  • AirTrain: no trains from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the nights of October 13, 14 and 15, 2026 (the last closure ends Friday, October 16, at 6 a.m.). Free shuttle buses replace the trains. Check the alerts page on jfkairport.com before you travel.
  • Terminal 7: since September 22, 2026, pick-ups, drop-offs and the taxi stand are inside the Terminal 7 parking garage.
  • Uber and Lyft: pick-ups for Terminals 5 and 7 are at the Howard Beach AirTrain station. The AirTrain ride there is free.
  • Terminal 6: still a construction site. On October 8, 2026, jfkairport.com lists no airline there and posts no opening date. JetBlue, Air Canada, ANA, Lufthansa, SWISS, TAP and others have announced a move, so recheck your terminal close to departure.
  • New Terminal One: the Port Authority expects its first 14 gates to open in 2027, on the Terminal 1 site.
  • Terminal 7 will be demolished once the second phase of Terminal 6 begins. No closing date is published.
  • Terminal 5 is finishing a renovation with 40+ new shops and restaurants, due for completion in 2026.

JFK airport map and getting between terminals

The official interactive map at maps.jfkairport.com shows terminal layouts, gates, walking routes and amenities. jfkairport.com also has a static overview map; we found no PDF map of each terminal there.

Terminals are not connected airside. To switch terminals, ride the AirTrain (free, under 10 minutes, trains every 5 to 15 minutes) and clear TSA again at your departure terminal.

Official walking times from security to the gates:

  • Terminal 1: 1 to 5 minutes
  • Terminal 4: 3 to 14 minutes (the B42 to B55 gates are the farthest)
  • Terminal 5: 3 to 10 minutes
  • Terminal 7: 1 to 5 minutes
  • Terminal 8: 2 to 12 minutes

Inside Terminal 4, a free Delta shuttle bus links concourses A and B, stopping at Gate B23, Gate B54 and near Gate A9.

Heading into Manhattan? The Port Authority's sample trip by AirTrain and LIRR takes about 30 minutes to Penn Station or Grand Central Madison. Our to-the-city page compares every option.

JFK arrivals and departures

The official departures and arrivals boards live on jfkairport.com. They work as a search: pick the date, then type a city or a flight number. There is no separate board per terminal. We don't show live flights here, so use those pages or your airline's app for gate changes.

The same official pages show live security wait times by terminal, and the Arrivals Guide posts live customs waits for Terminal 4.

How punctual is JFK? From August 2025 to July 2026, 74.86% of arrivals by U.S. reporting carriers landed on time, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. 3.76% of those flights were canceled. No comparable departures figure is published for the airport as a whole.

Car rental at JFK

Every rental counter is at Federal Circle, not in the terminals. Ride the AirTrain there for free from any terminal. Hotel shuttles also leave from Federal Circle.

Ten companies operate on the airport: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty. Some can supply cars with hand controls. Counter hours are not published by the airport, so check with your company.

Returning the car:

  • Set your GPS to Federal Circle Station.
  • Refuel at gas stations within two miles of the airport or at the JFK Airport Travel Plaza.
  • New York tolls are cashless. Use the rental company's E-ZPass, pay by plate, or bring your own E-ZPass without adding the rental plate to your account.

Restaurants and shops at JFK

The official directory lists 204 places to eat and drink and 131 shops. Most restaurants are after security, so eat once you're through.

Prices can't run more than 15% above street prices, and outlets marked We Value You sell bottled water for $2. Dining receipts may carry a surcharge of up to 3%. Prices change, so treat these as of October 8, 2026.

Worth knowing by terminal:

  • Terminal 1: The Local and Soy & Sake near Gates 5 and 6, luxury boutiques and iS Duty Free near Gate 4. Arrivals Eatery feeds you after customs.
