Hotels Near DTW Airport: Westin Inside and Free Shuttles

You have two kinds of airport hotel. One is attached to the terminal. The others are a short drive away in Romulus and run a shuttle.

• Inside the airport: The Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport, in McNamara Terminal.
• Nearby: six hotels that say on their own sites that they offer a complimentary airport shuttle.

The airport lists "Nearby Hotels" among its courtesy shuttles but names none. A hotel missing from this page may still have a shuttle, so ask. This page shows no room rates because they change daily.

The Westin is in McNamara Terminal, before security. The airport describes it as connected to the terminal, and its address is 2501 Worldgateway Place, Detroit, MI 48242. Phone: (734) 942-6500.

The hotel has a restaurant and bar, Reflections, with authorized entry to the terminal through a TSA checkpoint. The Westin also sells a fitness package that includes a shower, which is handy on a long layover.

The airport says the Westin Hotel can help with business center needs, since the terminals have none.

Marriott's own page says the hotel does not provide shuttle service of its own, so use the free Terminal to Terminal shuttle.

The free Terminal to Terminal shuttle links McNamara Terminal, Evans Terminal and the Westin. It leaves about every 10 minutes from the Ground Transportation Centers and from the Westin entrance.

The shuttle runs outside security. If you sleep at the Westin and fly from Evans, you will clear TSA screening at the terminal you leave from, so leave extra time.

These hotels are in Romulus. Distances are the ones each hotel publishes. Shuttle terms are the hotel's, not the airport's.

• Sheraton Detroit Metro Airport, 8000 Merriman Road: 2 miles. Free scheduled shuttle, 24 hours, 7 days a week. Another Marriott page says it runs every 30 minutes.
• Wingate by Wyndham Detroit Metro Airport, 9501 Middlebelt: about 2 miles. Free shuttle, hours not published. Phone (734) 946-4300.

The airport says courtesy shuttles, including hotel shuttles, can be reached from the Ground Transportation Center at each terminal, at any time. It publishes no pickup spot for each hotel. Start at the Ground Transportation Center of your terminal and call the hotel for the exact door.

McNamara Terminal's shuttle list also includes a "Hotel Shuttle" entry described as courtesy shuttles provided by hotels. Ask your hotel which terminal level and door it uses, especially if you land at Evans.

Most hotels do not post shuttle schedules online. Marriott lists the Detroit Metro Airport Marriott and the Courtyard shuttles as scheduled, so call to learn the timetable.

DTW's FAQ does not say whether you may stay overnight in the terminals, and its directory lists no sleep pods or day rooms. Ask at a Visitor Information Center or your airline before you plan to sleep in a terminal.

Two workable options:

• The Westin, in McNamara before security, sells a fitness package that includes a shower. Call (734) 942-6500 for the current price and hours.
• A shuttle hotel with a 24 hour shuttle: the Detroit Metro Airport Marriott, Courtyard, Sheraton or Embassy Suites. Ask whether they sell a few hours of use before you book.

The free Terminal to Terminal shuttle runs outside security, so leave time to clear TSA again.

The airport has no pay phones. Visitor Information Centers in both terminals can help you contact a local hotel. An Airport Ambassador may be there during normal business hours.

Do not confuse hotel shuttles with ride apps. Uber and Lyft meet riders only in the designated rideshare area, on Level 4 of the McNamara Parking Garage or Level 1 of the Big Blue Deck.

Rates change every day, so check them with the hotel. Confirm the shuttle with the hotel too. One Marriott page for the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Romulus says shuttle service is on request and free, while another lists the Qwik Park shuttle. It is not on this list, so ask the hotel directly if you are considering it.

Ask four things: is the shuttle free, does it run at your arrival hour, where does it stop at DTW, and does it run on a loop or on request.

Two nearby hotels mention packages with parking. The Hilton Garden Inn says extended parking is available only with its Stay and Fly package. The Embassy Suites lists a Stay and Fly package with off-site parking at a secure lot. Ask the hotel for terms and prices.

The airport itself has more than 16,000 garage spaces if you prefer to park there.
