A free shuttle links them and the Westin hotel, but it runs outside security. McNamara has Concourses A, B and C, and the ExpressTram runs along Concourse A. Downtown Detroit is about 23 miles away by road.

DTW terminals and airlines by terminal

DTW has two terminals, the Edward H. McNamara Terminal and the Warren Cleage Evans Terminal. Here is where airlines check in, according to the official airline directory:

  • McNamara Terminal: Delta, Aeromexico, Air France and WestJet. Vacation Express charters also use McNamara.
  • Evans Terminal: Air Canada, Alaska, American, Avelo, Frontier, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, Southwest, Sun Country, Turkish, United and Volaris. All charter flights, including Apple Vacations, are at Evans.

Delta is the hub airline at DTW. McNamara has Concourses A, B and C. Evans gates start with D. The directory says some boarding passes show EM for McNamara and WE for Evans.

Check your airline before you leave. Airlines can move.

What's changing at DTW right now

Check these before you fly:

  • The short-term entrance to the McNamara Parking Deck from the Level 8 Departures Level is closed from Oct. 5, 2026, and the airport expects it to stay closed until Feb. 26, 2027. The short-term entrance ramp on the east side of the deck stays open.
  • Restroom upgrades continue in McNamara Concourses A, B and C and in the Ground Transportation Center. Work is under way near gates A56, C6 and C20, and at domestic baggage claim. Signs point to the nearest open restroom.
  • MDOT's Restore I-94 project is in progress between Wayne Road and Schaefer Road, with completion scheduled for 2029. Leave extra time if you drive in on I-94.

Getting around DTW

The free Terminal to Terminal shuttle connects McNamara, Evans and the Westin hotel entrance. It leaves about every 10 minutes from the Ground Transportation Centers and the Westin entrance. DTW does not publish its hours, so call (734) 247-7678 if you are connecting late at night.

The shuttle runs outside security. If you change terminals, you clear TSA again, so allow plenty of time.

Inside McNamara, the ExpressTram runs along Concourse A, which is a mile long. The Terminal Station in the middle is closest to gates A29 to A55, check-in, baggage claim and the tunnel to Concourses B and C. The South Station serves gates A1 to A28 and the North Station serves A56 to A78. DTW says the tram only runs end to end of Concourse A, so it does not go to Concourse B or C.

Moving walkways help you along both terminals.

Arriving, departing and security

DTW says to arrive no later than 90 minutes before a domestic flight and 120 minutes before an international one. Its check-in page says 2 hours domestic and 3 hours international, and its FAQ says 90 minutes to 2 hours domestic and 3 hours international. Choose the longer time if you check bags or travel in a busy period.

TSA checkpoints: McNamara has the ticketing lobby on Level 3, the bridge from the parking garage on Level 2 and the Westin hotel. Evans has a checkpoint in the ticketing lobby. At least one McNamara checkpoint is open 24 hours a day. Evans screening is closed daily from 10:45 p.m. to 2:45 a.m., depending on late flights. TSA PreCheck lanes open at 4:30 a.m. in each terminal. CLEAR lanes are at both McNamara checkpoints.

DTW shows live security wait times on its home page. Check them before you leave for the airport.

International arrivals and Customs

International passengers clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at DTW. At McNamara, the International Arrivals Hall is on the Lower Level, one level below domestic baggage claim. At Evans, CBP is on Level 1 near domestic carousel 2.

DTW lists CBP counter hours effective January 11, 2026: McNamara 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Evans 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. These are the posted counter hours, not a limit on when international flights land: if you arrive from abroad outside those hours, you still go through the Customs process on arrival. The McNamara CBP Service Desk answers 24/7 at (734) 942-9000. DTW says Customs typically takes an hour or longer.

Automated Passport Control kiosks are available for U.S., Canadian and eligible Visa Waiver Program passport holders. Passengers coming from pre-clearance airports in parts of Canada and the Bahamas are generally treated as domestic on arrival.

Connecting through DTW

For a domestic connection on the same airline, DTW says 40 minutes should be enough. Allow more time for international trips or when you change airlines, and consider weather and delays.

Staying within McNamara, you can walk or ride the ExpressTram. If your flights are in different terminals, you take the shuttle outside security and clear TSA again.

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi covers both terminals. Choose Detroit Airport Wi-Fi, open a web browser and click Free Wi-Fi. No login is required. For help, call (800) 826-4646. Many, but not all, gate areas have outlets or charging stations.

Lost and found

Where you call depends on where you lost the item. Left at a TSA checkpoint: TSA Lost and Found, (734) 942-3126 or DTWtsalostandfound@tsa.dhs.gov. Its office is in McNamara, room T3-037, near the gate level checkpoint. Lost elsewhere in a terminal: file a claim with Wayne County Airport Authority Police, (734) 942-3669. On an aircraft or at a gate: contact your airline.

Luggage storage and carts

DTW has no lockers, so your bags must stay with you. The airport has Smarte Carte luggage carts for $7, but you cannot take them past security. SkyCap help depends on your airline.

Other services

Free Freedom Centers for military members, veterans and their families are near McNamara gate A43 and Evans gate D17. Both terminals have reflection rooms, nursing rooms and family restrooms. Eight nursing rooms are open to travelers: five in McNamara (near gates A18, A25, A53, A63 and C2) and three in Evans (across from gates D8, D15 and D24). A ninth room, in the Berry Administration Building, is for airport authority employees only.

The DTW Destination Pass lets people without a ticket go through security to meet gates and visit shops and restaurants. DTW gives different start times, 4 a.m. on the pass page and 5 a.m. in its FAQ, and both end at 9 p.m. You apply at a kiosk on the Departures Level and need a REAL ID or other acceptable ID.

The Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport hotel is inside McNamara. DTW says it can help with business needs, and its fitness package includes a shower. Call (734) 942-6500.
