How to get to your gate at SFO
You can use any checkpoint at any terminal with a boarding pass for the same day. After security, all boarding areas are connected, so from any checkpoint you can walk to any gate.
SFO's map of the airport gives two averages: 6 minutes between terminals on the walkways, and 3 minutes on the AirTrain. From the International Terminal, SFO suggests walking to the Terminal 1 B gates and to Terminal 3, and taking the AirTrain to Terminal 2.
The AirTrain runs 24 hours a day, outside the secure area: if you ride it between terminals, you go through security again. Its Red Line loops past all the terminals, the garages and the BART station.
Terminal 3 construction
The west side of Terminal 3 is being rebuilt. During the work, interim walkways past security link all the terminals around the site, including one by Gate E2 that ends in the Terminal 3 food court and F gates area.
The Terminal 3 AirTrain station is closed until the new facility opens in 2027. Use the Terminals 2 and 3 AirTrain Station instead. United passengers flying from the D and E gates check in at the United counters in Terminal 2, and those flying from the F gates check in at Terminal 3.
Domestic and international gates
The A and G gates are in the Dianne Feinstein International Terminal, where almost all international airlines are based. United flies its domestic flights mainly from the E and F gates in Terminal 3, and some from the D gates in Terminal 2, and its international flights from the G gates. Air Canada (Terminal 2) and Aer Lingus (Harvey Milk Terminal 1) are exceptions.
Not every flight from the A gates is international: SFO's airline list also puts Frontier there. Check your boarding pass.
Connecting from an international flight? Except for flights from Canada and Ireland, SFO sends you to the checkpoint of your next gate: Checkpoint A for the A gates, Terminal 1 for the B and C gates, International Terminal G for the F and G gates, and for the D gates either the F gates checkpoint in Terminal 3 or the AirTrain Red Line to the Terminal 2 checkpoint.
Reading the gate numbers
Each boarding area shows its first and last gate, for example D1 to D18. Not every number is used:
- Boarding Area D has no D13.
- Boarding Area E starts at E2, and Boarding Area F at F5.
- The other areas run without a gap: A1 to A15, B1 to B27, C1 to C11 and G1 to G14.
Open the gate list of a boarding area to see every gate, or type your gate in the finder above. Gates can change, so check your boarding pass and the airport screens.
