Your options at a glance

Where the SFO Rental Car Center is

The center is at 780 N. McDonnell Road, San Francisco, CA 94128. SFO says all rentals are picked up and returned in this one central place.

The airport lists nine on-airport brands: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Sixt, Hertz, National and Thrifty. Hertz is on the 1st floor. The others are on the 4th floor (Sixt also lists Level 1).

How to get there from each terminal

Use the AirTrain Blue Line. It is free and runs 24 hours a day. SFO says AirTrain station departures run as often as every four minutes. Stations are in all terminals, the terminal garages, the BART station and the Rental Car Center.

  • Harvey Milk Terminal 1 and Terminal 2: take the elevator or escalator to Mezzanine, Level 3, and cross the skybridge to the AirTrain station.
  • Terminal 3: the Terminal 3 AirTrain station is closed until the new facility opens in 2027. Use the combined Terminals 2 & 3 AirTrain Station, the renamed Terminal 2 station. United passengers should use it too.
  • International Terminal: take the elevator or escalator to Level 4 and use the AirTrain stations near the A and G Gates.

The Red Line does not go to the Rental Car Center. The Blue Line loop is counterclockwise and takes about 25 minutes to complete the whole circle. SFO does not publish a ride time from each terminal. Between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. nightly maintenance can change AirTrain operation and lengthen trips, so add time.

Off-airport agencies and Turo

Fox is the off-airport agency SFO lists. It is reached by a free shuttle from the Rental Car Center. The shuttle stops at the south curb of the center when you ask. Fox lists (415) 917-2713 and hours of 5:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Turo cars are picked up and returned in International Garage A or G. From Terminals 1, 2 or 3, ride the AirTrain to the Garage A or Garage G station, then go to the level in your Turo confirmation. When you leave, follow signs for International Terminal/Hourly Parking, park in Garage A or G and note the garage and level in the app.

Returning your car

The Rental Car Center is where cars come back, and the AirTrain Blue Line takes you from there to your terminal. Dollar, Sixt and Thrifty say returns are open 24 hours. The airport does not publish other return-lane instructions, so ask your company for the exact entrance and how long to allow.

If you want to skip carrying bags, Remote Bag Check at Kiss & Fly is inside the Rental Car Center, Level 1. It is free, open daily from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and works for domestic flights on American, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue and United. Airline baggage fees still apply.

Fees and what SFO does not publish

SFO does not publish rental rates, airport concession fees or fuel station locations on its rental page. Your company's quote should show taxes and fees before you pay. SFO links to the San Francisco parking guide and the California DMV rules of the road for drivers new to the area.

Other ways to reach the center

SamTrans routes EPX and 142 stop at the Rental Car Center. SFO says you can reach the center from the terminals on the AirTrain Blue Line, so most travelers should do that. Kiss & Fly at the center is also a drop-off spot for friends and family: after drop-off, passengers board the AirTrain to any terminal.
