SFO Airport Guide: Terminals, Airlines, AirTrain and Food

SFO has three domestic terminals, Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, plus the Dianne Feinstein International Terminal with A and G gates. American, Delta and Alaska use Terminal 1, Southwest uses Terminal 2 and United domestic uses Terminal 3. Alaska called itself SFO's second-largest carrier in June 2024. The west end of Terminal 3 is under construction, with a new AirTrain station expected in 2027. The free AirTrain runs 24 hours a day and links the terminals.

Main airlines: SFO's airline and parking list puts American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Sun Country, Aer Lingus and WestJet at Harvey Milk Terminal 1. Alaska Airlines also flies from Terminal 1: it moved there from Terminal 2 on June 19, 2024, and its lounge is on the Retail Street. SFO's garage-by-airline page still lists Alaska at Terminal 2, so check your boarding pass. Terminal 1 has the B gates (B1 to B27) and the C gates (C1 to C11), per SFO's Meeting Points page. One older getting-around page files the C gates under Terminal 2, which the lounge page and Meeting Points page contradict.

Main airlines: SFO's airline and parking list puts Breeze, Southwest and Air Canada at Terminal 2. Air Canada checks in, boards and has baggage claim here. Because of the Terminal 3 construction, United also has check-in counters on the west side of Terminal 2, and United passengers flying from D and E gates should use them. Gates D1 to D18 are in Terminal 2.

Southwest, Breeze and Air Canada. During construction it also takes United check-ins for D and E gates.

Main airlines: United domestic flights. SFO lists gates E2 to E13 and F5 to F22 for Terminal 3. United flies its international flights from the International Terminal G Gates. The west part of Terminal 3 is being rebuilt: the west United ticket counters are closed, the east counters stay open, and passengers for F gates check in at Terminal 3. The Terminal 3 AirTrain station is closed until the new facility opens in 2027.

SFO terminals and airlines by terminal

SFO has three domestic terminals, Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, plus the Dianne Feinstein International Terminal with an A side and a G side. Where airlines are listed, according to SFO's airline and parking list and the airlines' own announcements:

  • Terminal 1: Alaska (since June 19, 2024), American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Sun Country, Aer Lingus and WestJet.
  • Terminal 2: Breeze, Southwest and Air Canada. United also has check-in counters here during Terminal 3 construction.
  • Terminal 3: United domestic flights.
  • International Terminal A Gates: Frontier, Aeromexico, Air France, Air India, Air Premia, Alaska (Mexico arrivals), Avianca, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Condor, Copa, Emirates, EVA Air, Flair, Frenchbee, Iberia, ITA Airways, Japan Airlines, KLM, Korean Air, LEVEL, Philippine Airlines, Porter, Qantas, Qatar Airways, STARLUX, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and ZIPAIR.
  • International Terminal G Gates: Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana, Fiji Airways, Lufthansa, SAS, Singapore Airlines, Swiss and United international flights.

United flies domestic flights from Terminal 3 and international flights from the G Gates. Most international flights leave from the International Terminal, but Air Canada uses Terminal 2 for check-in, boarding and baggage claim.

Alaska moved from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 in June 2024, but SFO's garage-by-airline page still lists it at Terminal 2. Trust Alaska and your boarding pass. The same list is a parking page and may leave out some carriers, so confirm your airline in SFO's airline directory at flysfo.com. Airlines do move.

What's changing at SFO right now

Check these before you fly:

  • Terminal 3 West is being rebuilt. SFO says the project will add a larger check-in lobby with self bag-drop, new central checkpoints, 250,000 square feet of shopping and dining and more international swing gates.
  • The Terminal 3 Departures curb and drop-off lane is closed between Doors 6 and 13. SFO suggests dropping off at Terminal 2 or on the Terminal 3 arrivals level. If you have no bags to check, drop off at Terminal 2 and go through the checkpoint.
  • The west United ticket counters in Terminal 3 are closed. East counters stay open. United has opened counters on the west side of Terminal 2. For flights from D and E gates, use the Terminal 2 counters. For F gates, use Terminal 3.
  • The Terminal 3 AirTrain station is closed until the new facility opens in 2027. The Terminal 2 station is renamed Terminals 2 and 3 AirTrain Station, and United passengers should use it.
  • Terminal 3 baggage claim carousels 1 to 3 are closed. Pickups are at curbside Doors 4 to 12, and SFO says the lines are shorter toward Doors 10 to 12.
  • The American Express Centurion Lounge has moved to Terminal 2.
  • Interim walkways let you walk between all terminals past security around the construction site.

Arrivals, departures and getting to the curb

For flight times and gate changes, check your airline or flysfo.com. We don't repost flight information here.

How the curbs work:

  • Drop-off: curbs are for active drop-off and pickup only. Cars can't wait at the curb. At the domestic terminals, Lyft and Uber drop-offs are on the Departures levels, though SFO suggests asking for an Arrivals level or garage drop-off in busy times.
  • Lyft and Uber pickup at the domestic terminals is on Level 5 of the Domestic Garage: Terminal 1 uses the A/B and B cores, Terminal 2 uses C and D, and Terminal 3 uses E, F and F/G. At the International Terminal, pickup is on the center island zones 12 to 17 of the Departures/Ticketing Level roadway.
  • Taxis leave from the center island zones on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level of every terminal. SFO says taxi coordinators are there from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.
  • Hotel shuttles stop at the center island on the Departures/Ticketing Level of Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and on the Arrivals Level at the International Terminal.
  • Meeting someone? The free Cell Phone Waiting Lot at North McDonnell Rd. and San Bruno Ave. lets you wait up to 60 minutes. It is closed from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Kiss and Fly: drop off passengers at the Rental Car Center on North McDonnell Rd. and they take the AirTrain Blue Line to the terminals.
  • Customs Clearance office: International Terminal Arrivals Lobby, Level 2, before security.

Arriving from abroad and meeting points

International arrivals clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the International Terminal. Passengers connecting to an onward flight must go through the federal inspection process, then exit and re-enter security. Flights precleared abroad don't need to do either. Mobile Passport Control and Global Entry lanes are available. The Global Entry enrollment office (by appointment only) is on the pre-security Arrivals Level of the International Terminal, open daily 7:00 a.m. to 10:15 p.m.

Meeting someone? You can't meet arriving passengers at the gate, and cars can't wait at the curb. SFO suggests these meeting points:

  • Terminal 1: seating near the exits of the B gates. For C gates, the signed Meeting Point on the Departures/Ticketing Level near the exits.
  • Terminal 2: the signed Meeting Point on the Departures/Ticketing Level near the exits.
  • Terminal 3: the signed Meeting Point on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level between Baggage Carousels 3 and 4, or by the E Gates exit on the Departures Level.
  • International Terminal: the signed Meeting Point in the Arrivals Level lobby, at the U.S. Customs and Immigration exit.

Getting around SFO

Past security and before it, SFO says all terminals are connected by walkways. SFO's advice from the International Terminal: walk to Terminal 1 gates B1 to B27, take the AirTrain to Terminal 2, and walk to Terminal 3.

AirTrain is free and runs 24 hours a day, with trains as often as every four minutes. It has two lines:

  • Red Line: a clockwise loop that connects all terminals, terminal garages, the BART station and the Grand Hyatt. The loop takes about 9 minutes.
  • Blue Line: a counterclockwise loop that also reaches Long-Term Parking and the Rental Car Center. The loop takes about 25 minutes.

AirTrain is your only way to reach the Rental Car Center and Long-Term Parking. Between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., maintenance can change AirTrain service and make trips longer.

To find a station: from Terminal 1 or 2, take the elevator or escalator to Mezzanine Level 3 and cross the skybridge. From the International Terminal Main Hall, go to Level 4 for the stations near the A and G gates. The Terminal 3 station is closed until 2027, so use the Terminals 2 and 3 station.

BART is at the Departures/Ticketing Level of the International Terminal, G Gates side. Ride the AirTrain to the Garage G/BART stop, or get off at the International Terminal A station and walk through the Main Hall. For Caltrain, take BART to Millbrae. SamTrans Route 292 stops at the terminals.
