How to get to your gate at PHX

Check your terminal first. PHX lists American and Southwest at Terminal 4, and Delta, United, Alaska, Frontier and JetBlue at Terminal 3, among others. The letter of your gate is its concourse: A to D are in Terminal 4, E and F in Terminal 3.

In Terminal 4, any of the four checkpoints (A, B, C or D) leads to every gate, so you can pick the shortest line. In Terminal 3, one checkpoint serves both the E and F gates.

PHX doesn't publish walking times, which it says vary by person. It does give the distance from the closest checkpoint to the farthest gate of each concourse, so your gate may be closer:

  • Terminal 3, E gates (north side): 910 feet
  • Terminal 3, F gates (south side): 1,475 feet
  • Terminal 4, A gates: 1,405 feet
  • Terminal 4, B gates: 1,380 feet
  • Terminal 4, C gates: 1,100 feet
  • Terminal 4, D gates: 337 feet

Changing terminals on the PHX Sky Train

If you connect on the same airline, PHX says you can stay behind security: your next flight leaves from the same terminal. If you connect to another airline, you may have to change terminals. Check whether you need to claim and re-check your bags, then plan time to go through security again.

The free PHX Sky Train links Terminal 3 and Terminal 4:

  • From Terminal 3, take an elevator or escalator up to Level 4 and follow the signs to the Sky Train.
  • From Terminal 4, go up to Level 3 and walk toward the center of the terminal.

The train runs 24 hours a day. From 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., waits average about 3.5 to 7 minutes. From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly maintenance can push waits to 15 minutes or more.

Concourse D and the newest gates

Concourse D has two groups of gates. Gates D1 to D8 opened in March 2005 in a Terminal 4 concourse with its own checkpoint. Gates D11 to D18 are in an eight-gate concourse that opened in June 2022, and PHX says Southwest uses them. That concourse has hearing loops at the gate areas.

More gates are coming to Terminal 3: a six-gate north concourse is under construction, and PHX expects to finish it in 2027. It is not open to travelers yet.

Reading the gate numbers

The official map does not use every number. Concourse A goes from A14 to A17, Concourse C has no C5, C10 or C15, and Concourse D jumps from D8 to D11.

Some gates carry a letter. The official map shows B1 and B1A as a single spot, and B15A, B15B and B15C as another. B1 and B1A share one gate area, and B15A, B15B and B15C share another. We list each code so the finder recognizes the one on your boarding pass.

Open the gate list of a concourse to see every gate, or type your gate in the finder above. Gates can change, so check your boarding pass and the airport screens.

International arrivals

PHX says most international flights arrive at Terminal 4, Level 3, at the east end near Dunkin'. For flights from Canada, customs and immigration clearance sometimes happens before departure in Canada, so ask your airline which terminal and gate to expect.
