Terminals, concourses and getting between them

ATL has two terminals. The Domestic Terminal (6000 North Terminal Parkway) has North and South sides. The International Terminal (2600 Maynard H. Jackson Jr. Blvd.) has its own entrance. If you are flying outside the United States, check in at the International Terminal.

Past security you will find seven concourses: T, then A through F. The Plane Train links the concourses and the International Terminal. Plan for a ride, not a walk, if your gate is far from where you came in.

The Plane Train runs 24 hours a day. ATL says its new cars will cut the wait between trains from 108 to 90 seconds, and Alstom, the train maker, says trains can now run every 90 seconds at peak. Overnight it may run in a reduced two-train shuttle mode, so expect longer waits late at night. A pedestrian walkway also links the concourses, and it now reaches Concourse F.

To get between the two terminals, ride the Plane Train or take the free shuttle. It runs 24/7 from the curb outside the International Terminal to the west end of the Domestic Terminal, and the ride takes about 15 minutes.

Arrivals, departures and when to arrive

For live flight times and gate changes, use the official airport website at atl.com or your airline. We don't repost flight information here.

ATL advises arriving at least 2 hours before a domestic departure and 3 hours before an international one. The busiest time is 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., plus holidays and long weekends.

Only ticketed passengers, airport staff, people meeting or greeting travelers and others with legitimate business can enter the airport.

Security checkpoints at a glance

ATL has five checkpoints: Domestic Main (24 hours), North, Lower North, South (PreCheck only) and International. You can reach every concourse from any of them. Live waits are on atl.com/times.

Getting to Downtown Atlanta

By road, ATL is about 20 minutes south of Downtown in normal traffic. The International Terminal entrance is off I-75 at Exit 239.

MARTA's Airport Station is inside the Domestic Terminal, between the North and South baggage claims, on the Red and Gold lines. The standard fare is $2.50. The ride time to Downtown isn't published on the MARTA pages we read, so check itsmarta.com.

Rental cars

The Rental Car Center houses 12 brands and is open 24/7. It is a few minutes from the airport by the free SkyTrain. A shuttle from the International Terminal runs about every 15 minutes.
