SAN terminals and airlines by terminal
SAN has two terminals. Each has its own ticketing, baggage claim, shops, gates and TSA checkpoints. Here is where the 17 airlines in SAN's airline directory check in:
- Terminal 1: Air Canada, Breeze, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country, WestJet.
- Terminal 2: Alaska, American, British Airways, Copa, Delta, Hawaiian, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, United.
SAN does not publish a separate list of hub carriers. Its history page names Southwest as the largest carrier. Terminal 2 has an East side and a West side, and the two sides have separate security checkpoints. Airlines move, so confirm yours on your boarding pass or on san.org/airlines.
What is changing at SAN right now
Check these before you fly:
- The new Terminal 1 opened in 2025 with 19 gates. SAN's November 13, 2025 update says the original Terminal 1 is permanently closed and being demolished. Phase 1B adds 11 more gates, with completion listed for 2028. Terminal 1 is a construction area while that work continues.
- Air Canada and WestJet moved from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 on January 14, 2026.
- SAN lists a 13 lane security checkpoint for the finished Terminal 1. Today SAN describes one main checkpoint in Terminal 1, after ticketing.
- During construction the roadway between Terminals 1 and 2 is closed to all traffic. Use the Inter-Terminal Shuttle.
- Air France plans nonstop flights to Paris starting May 3, 2027, three times a week. SAN has not published the terminal yet.
- Phase 1B is also listed to bring a children's play area, new lounges and more dining and shopping.
- We did not find a published date for the next group of Terminal 1 gates. Check san.org before you fly.
Security and arrival time
SAN says to arrive at least 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours early for international flights. Ticket counters and security checkpoints reopen at about 4:15 a.m. Overnight stays in gate areas are not allowed.
Terminal 1 has one main checkpoint after ticketing. Terminal 2 has separate East and West checkpoints based on airline location. TSA PreCheck is available in both terminals. CLEAR announced CLEAR+ lanes in the new Terminal 1 on September 23, 2025. SAN's security page lists CLEAR+ at Terminal 2 East from 4 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily, while another SAN page puts CLEAR at Checkpoint 6 in Terminal 2 West. Confirm hours and location with CLEAR before you plan around it.
Getting between terminals and to the city
The free Inter-Terminal Shuttle runs between Terminals 1 and 2 daily from 4 a.m. to 2 a.m., with a live tracker on san.org. A free Rental Car Center shuttle runs between the terminals and the Rental Car Center 24 hours a day.

International arrivals and customs
International flights arrive at SAN's International Arrivals facility, which has six gates, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspection and an expanded baggage claim. SAN does not say on its pages which terminal building it connects to, so follow the signs for international arrivals when you land.
Use Mobile Passport Control if you are eligible: CBP lists SAN among its airports, and the app lets you submit your passport details and declaration before you arrive. International arrivals can complete a Global Entry interview through the Enrollment on Arrival program. Luggage carts are free in the International Arrivals Hall.
For questions about customs and immigration, call the Federal Inspection Services International Arrival Terminal at (619) 230-8178. Plan for 3 hours before an international departure, as SAN advises. British Airways, Copa, Japan Airlines, KLM and Lufthansa check in at Terminal 2, and Air Canada and WestJet at Terminal 1. Air France adds Paris in May 2027.
Wi-Fi
SAN offers free Wi-Fi with 2 hour sessions. Connect to #Official SAN Wi-fi and reconnect when a session ends. Fuel Rod stations in both terminals sell refillable charging units for $25 or swap them for a charged one.
Lost and found
The SAN Lost and Found takes items lost in public areas: restrooms, TSA security checkpoints, the terminal shuttle, the Rental Car Center, employee shuttles and airport parking lots. Items lost at TSA checkpoints reach Lost and Found within 24 hours. Submit a lost item claim on san.org. A custodian will reach out within 48 hours if there is a match.
The office is at 3707 N. Harbor Drive, Suite 109, Terminal 2 ground level. Phone 619.400.2140. Pickup is by appointment only, every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A third party needs email authorization to collect an item.
For something left on a plane, at a ticket counter or in checked luggage, contact your airline. Blankets, hats, pillows, water bottles and face masks are thrown away on receipt unless they are inside a bag, and so are food and soiled items.
