Where to find the rental car shuttle

After you collect your bags, go to the Baggage Claim level and exit down the ramp to Door 2 or Door 4. Rental shuttles pick up at Curb 2C or Curb 2D, per the airport's rental car page. The airport's FAQ says instead that rental shuttles are at Curbs 2C and 2F, reached from Doors 2, 4 or 6. Look for your brand's bus at the rental car curb and follow the Ground Transportation signs.

The airport says every rental company listed on its site is on the airport. Free shuttle buses, operated by the rental companies (some share a bus), run between the rental lots and the Main Terminal, and all rental shuttles have wheelchair ramps or lifts. The airport publishes no schedule or ride time. Enterprise says its shuttles run every 5 to 10 minutes, and Avis says its buses circle continuously and the ride is about 5 minutes.

Which brands share a shuttle

Two shared buses are noted by the airport, as examples:

  • Enterprise, National and Alamo
  • Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty

The airport does not say whether Avis, Budget and Sixt share a bus. Read the brand on the front of the bus before you board.

Rental companies and phone numbers

The airport lists these nine companies. Two companies publish their street address: Avis is at 23330 Autopilot Dr and Enterprise at 23430 Autopilot Dr, Dulles, VA 20166.

  • Alamo: 844-648-1605
  • Avis: 800-331-1212
  • Budget: 800-218-7992
  • Dollar: 800-800-4000
  • Enterprise: 844-648-1602
  • Hertz: 800-654-3131
  • National: 844-648-1604
  • Sixt: 888-749-8227
  • Thrifty: 800-541-7044

To change a reservation, contact the rental company directly. The airport does not handle changes.

Returning your car

Follow the airport road signs to Rental Car Return. All rental lots are on Autopilot Drive. Drop the car, then ride your company's free shuttle back to the Main Terminal.

Where to leave the car inside each lot depends on the company, so follow the staff and signs there.

Tolls near Dulles

Rush hour tolls on nearby Virginia Route 66 can affect your trip to or from the airport. The airport tells you to ask your rental company about your planned route and tolls, and points to 66expresslanes.org. The Dulles Access Highway is for airport traffic only, so do not plan to use it as a route.

Turo and car sharing

IAD has a partnership with Turo. Turo pickup and return is allowed only at Parking Garages 1 and 2 and Economy Parking. It is strictly prohibited at the curb, in the Terminal Lot and at the Valet Service Center.

Free shuttles run 24/7 between the terminal and the on-airport garages and lots. Parking charges for the host or guest are not published on the airport page, so check Turo and the airport parking pages before you go.

Fees and taxes

Neither the airport page nor the Enterprise location page lists airport fees or concession charges. Your rental company shows the full total, including airport fees and taxes, in its booking flow, so compare totals before you pay. Enterprise lists a $25 per day surcharge for renters ages 21 to 24.

No car? Other ways to leave IAD

If you only need a ride, Uber and Lyft pick up at the dedicated Curb 3 outside Baggage Claim, Washington Flyer taxis wait down the ramp at Door 1 or Door 7 (the airport's FAQ says Doors 2 or 6; follow the Taxi signs inside the terminal), and the Silver Line Metro station is reached by an indoor pedestrian walkway. See our page on getting from IAD to the city for details.
