Sacramento International Airport
SMF Airport Guide: Terminals A and B, Airlines, Food and Wi-Fi
Sacramento International Airport (SMF) has two terminals, Terminal A and Terminal B, in separate buildings. American, Delta, United and Air Canada use Terminal A. Aeromexico, Alaska, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest and Volaris use Terminal B. In Terminal B you check in in the main building, ride the Automated People Mover from level 3 to Concourse B, and go through TSA there. Walking between the terminals takes about 10 minutes.

SMF terminals and airlines by terminal
SMF has two passenger terminals. Here is where each airline is, according to the airport's airline directory:
- Terminal A: American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines and Air Canada. Check-in is on the ground level and the TSA checkpoint is on level 2.
- Terminal B: Aeromexico, Alaska Airlines, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest and Volaris. Airline ticket counters are on the second level, above baggage claim. To reach the gates, take the Automated People Mover from level 3 of the main building to Concourse B. The TSA checkpoint is in Concourse B, at the end of that ride, so you ride the train before you go through security.
SMF does not say that any airline has a hub here. Airlines move, so check your boarding pass or your airline's website before you go.
The airport lists 10 passenger airlines in its directory. Delta, FedEx, Southwest and the U.S. Postal Service also run cargo operations.
What's changing at SMF right now
SMF is building a large expansion called SMForward. Here is what affects you:
- Parking Garage 2: a six-story garage with 5,537 spaces next to Terminal B. The airport's parking map says it is opening in fall 2026, and a September 17, 2026 airport release says it opens later this year. Parking rates go up when it opens (airport release of September 17, 2026): Economy from $12 to $14 a day, the Daily Lot from $14 to $19 and the garage from $21 to $28. Parking reservations start in 2027.
- Pedestrian Walkway: a skybridge with moving sidewalks, escalators and elevators between Terminal B and Concourse B. It is under construction, and the airport has not published an opening date. Until then, use the Automated People Mover.
- New air traffic control tower: the airport announced on September 28, 2026 that the FAA awarded the contract. It does not change how you travel.
- West Economy Lot: the airport's parking page showed it as closed on October 15, 2026.
Check flysmf.gov before you leave for the latest on construction.
Arrivals, departures and when to arrive
For flight times and gate changes, check your airline or flysmf.gov. We don't repost flight information here.
SMF suggests you ask your airline how early to arrive. As a rule of thumb, the airport says 2.5 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. You may be denied check-in if you arrive less than 45 minutes before departure.
The public areas of both terminals are open 24 hours a day. The concourses close 30 minutes after the last flight lands, usually between midnight and 1 a.m. The TSA checkpoints open at 4 a.m. and close at about 12:30 a.m., depending on flight schedules.
The curb is for active loading and unloading only. Cars left waiting are ticketed or towed. If you are picking someone up, use the free Waiting Area, also called the cell phone lot. Uber, Lyft and Wingz pick up at the ground transportation curb. The airport's International Arrivals area is in Terminal B, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processes passengers arriving from foreign countries. The local CBP office is at 916-649-3671. Visit it only by appointment or if a CBP officer sends you there. Allow extra time for the arrival process on an international flight.
Getting between Terminal A and Terminal B
The two terminals are separate buildings. You have two ways to get between them:
- Walk: about 10 minutes, and the airport says it is the fastest option. From Terminal A, take the escalator or elevator up to level 2, cross the sky bridge to the garage and follow the signs and the marked walking path to Terminal B. Take the elevator at the back of the garage to level 5 and cross the sky bridge. You arrive on level 3 of Terminal B, where the Automated People Mover is ahead and to the right of Old Soul Baking Co. From Terminal B, go up to level 3, cross the sky bridge to the garage, then follow the signs to Terminal A.
- Shuttle: take the Daily Lot shuttle from the ground transportation curb. It is free and runs 24 hours a day. The airport FAQ says it comes every 10 minutes, while the airport's parking page says 15 to 20 minutes and its parking map says 10 to 15, so allow for a wait. From Terminal A, any Daily or Economy Lot shuttle also stops at Terminal B.
If you connect to an airline in the other terminal, you must go through the TSA checkpoint again before you reach your gate. Allow extra time for this.
Inside Terminal B, the Automated People Mover runs between the main building (level 3) and Concourse B, where the gates and the TSA checkpoint are. A Pedestrian Walkway under construction will add a walking option.
